15 Hours Into The Future

Aloo. I plan to use this blog as a travel log essentially of my (prospective) experiences at Ritsumeikan University's Study in Kyoto program for the Spring of 2008. Spring being a relative term, however, as the semester is slated to last from the first week of April to the end of July, not exactly comparable to the University of Mississippi (mid-January to mid-May!), where I am a junior in the Croft Institute of International Studies. I have studied Japanese for roughly three or four years, through various mediums including enrichment courses, private tutoring, and of course classes at the university. This will be my first journey to Japan.

Hi there!

It's nice to meet you! Have you heard back from SKP yet? Best of luck with your applications, and hope to see you in April.

As for the Program, it's fantastic. At the beginning of the term, you have to take a placement test to determine your Japanese level, starting from beginner all the way up to being able to take regular classes with Japanese students. I have been very satisfied so far with the language courses.

There are also courses in English that we're allowed to take. They are intended for students with English as a second language, and from my own experiences and talking to people, the level of difficulty varies greatly depending on the teacher and class. I took three of those courses, and was very happy with two, and not as satisfied with one. Just ask around.

The school is fantastic overall. Lovely campus, good area, cheap but good cafeteria food. Kyoto is also an amazing city, there is so much to see and do, and for the most part the people are lovely.

Have you applied for housing yet? If you're not with a partner university, you may not have access to housing, but if you are, the housing is quite good.

Anyways, I hope some of this information will be useful to you :) If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know.

Cheers,

Laura
